The originators of what became Sambo studied, evaluated and included techniques from Judo, Jujutsu, and Savate ( these figure most prominently ), Karatedo, Mongolian Wrestling, Boxing, Free-Style Wrestling, Pancration (through historical research and conjecture), Germanic, Slavic, Turkic, and even Native American wrestling styles. Pentjak-Silat, Icelandic Glima, and even lesser known styles were examined and selectively added to self defense training, with an eye to the needs of Soviet soldiers, police (Militia), and NKVD (which became the KGB).
One of the most influential training methods came from Jigoro Kano‘s Judo; that of combining technical training with a competitive free-fighting format, allowing for the practice of the techniques that do not necessarily injure, under the performance pressure of a match with a similarly skilled opponent. Sambo Combat eventually included close quarters weapons training in its syllabus ( knife-bayonet, baton, entrenching tool, etc.,). The Sambo (Sombo) self defense student, is taught a full range of techniques; Throws, takedowns, strangles, locks, pain holds, pressure points, punches, kicks, strikes, situational defenses, and both escapes and control - come along techniques (Sambo was designed by police, for police, even if they were secret police ).
Sambo’s original status as a State Secret (although 300,000 people practiced Sambo in the then Soviet Union; a strange kind of secret!) combines with the unfortunate tendency for political squabbling amongst its international leadership, to hinder its possible further development into in Olympic sport, though it will soon again be included in the World Games.
