There are so many styles of jujitsu - why do we have our own?
The new, expanded jujitsu program at South Mountain Martial Arts is a balanced system of recreation in which the elements of personal development, vigorous sportive activity, and training in classic methods of self defense are given equal weight. As it is essentially a form of classical judo, instruction in South Mountain Jujitsu includes:
-Throws and takedowns
-Submission grappling (e.g., locks, chokes, pins & restraining holds).
-Ethical self defense techniques, including specialized atemi (strikes).
- & evidence based methods for mental clarity and relaxed concentration.
In all of our classes, our goal is to provide uncompromised, professional instruction in a challenging and supportive environment.
South Mountain Jujitsu is a practical martial art for active, thoughtful people, with or without competition

All of our classes are open to the public. Please feel free to visit us!
We support competition in a several types of combat sport contests - when our students are ready and willing to enter them - but contest participation is by no means mandatory or necessary. Students may chose to compete or not to compete regardless of their reasons.
A portion of each class is dedicated to randori (a form of free grappling). The intensity of this activity is often suggested by the instructor of the class, but must be subject to a mutual agreement between each pair of participants. South Mountain Martial Arts can provide very challenging competition or an extremely light form of randori, depending on students needs.
(Please see the video clips on this page to view a selection of grappling techniques.)
Because our jujitsu system is closely related to classical judo
, contest oriented students are encouraged to enter local and regional judo, jujitsu, or sambo competitions. For more information, please see our page entitled:
A promotion system based upon true merit
Vigorous training - sometimes intense, but always civilized
As in judo, progress in the study of South Mountain jujitsu is rewarded by belt rank promotions. All of our jujitsu students must demonstrate a rank-appropriate level of knowledge of fighting techniques and strategies, and they must also gain proficiency in randori. Participation in contests is not required for advancement in rank, but success in contest would certainly be considered as a factor in determining a student's readiness for promotion.
In our system of jujitsu, promotions take time; they are only awarded when a student is judged to be adequately prepared for advancement.
While friendly competition is encouraged, Challenge-Match/Gladiator style competitions are simply UNacceptable, and are not permitted. Our jujitsu is, at its heart, a healthy activity, which is taught in a courteous, friendly, professional atmosphere.
